As CEO of Omnia Education Partnerships, Ms. Mervi Jansson has over 20 years of diverse experience in education and training. In our exclusive interview, Jansson describes the advantages of Vocational Education as well as the benefits of AI.
How does incorporating Artificial Intelligence in learning benefit students? Should UAE schools have AI-assisted learning landscapes?
AI makes personalized learning scalably possible. By integrating AI into digital learning, one can offer each student support through content that’s suitable for his/her level and analyze the students’ competences based on input. If schools use digital learning actively, integrating AI turns a one-size-fits-all solution into a personalized solution.
In your opinion, what are the key challenges involving teaching, learning, and assessment in Finland’s current education landscape?
Finland is tackling the same challenge as education globally; how to ensure relevance in the future.
Currently, Finland is also focusing on developing assessment criteria and tools to make assessment more personal and equitable.
How does vocational education open a path to higher education? What makes this method of training more effective than traditional methods?
According to Finnish law, a graduate from a vocational program has the equal right to apply to higher education programs as a high school graduate. The vocational path is more hands-on, and students have the benefit of learning about the sector early on in their learning path. Often, they are more motivated as higher education students because they have more experience and knowledge of the sector. In the Finnish model of TVET, learning is diverse; learning at school, in projects and work-based learning. Students acquire skills needed at work throughout their studies. Theory supports practical learning in a flexible and often more motivating way when students can apply the knowledge immediately in real life.
With the success of the Future Entrepreneurs Training Program, what would you say are the factors that lead to this?
Future Entrepreneurs is a blended learning program inspiring creativity in students and offering them a new type of learning experience linked to the world of work. The digital component is an AI-based story of an entrepreneur. This format supports the understanding of business challenges requiring the students to make real business decisions.
Local teachers were trained by OEP to teach the program in local schools. The teachers, together with their students, are the heroes behind the success of the program.
If you were to predict an ideal future for vocational education in the UAE, what would it look like?
Ideally, the UAE will offer less traditional TVET paths linked to industry 4.0 and thus more interesting for students and relevant for companies. TVET paths need to be based on anticipation, building competency also for those in need of upskilling or reskilling and flexible in nature with active ties to the industry.
